Ināra Mūrniece meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping

“The joint visit of the Nordic and Baltic(NB8) speakers to China not only promotes cooperation between China and the Nordic-Baltic region, but also advances the Latvia-China bilateral ties”, stressed Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, while meeting Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, together with other speakers of NB8 countries in Beijing.

During the meeting with the Chinese President, Speaker Mūrniece underlined the importance of active inter-parliamentary exchanges as a way to provide a political framework for business cooperation. “NB8 is a unique vehicle for regional cooperation, and we are happy to come together and join our efforts in strengthening cooperation with China, our strategic partner”, said Ināra Mūrniece. President Xi Jinping emphasised the novelty of a group of eight speakers arriving on a joint visit to China and stated that it would undoubtedly bring the relations between the parties to a higher level.

The NB8 speakers and President Xi Jinping agreed on the necessity to bring our countries closer in order to work together. Speaker Mūrniece highlighted the need to cooperate on ensuring the rules-based international order. Latvia supports China’s ambition to cooperate more actively in the international arena.

The potential of economic cooperation was also discussed during the meeting. Speaker Mūrniece reiterated the importance of China’s Road and Belt initiative to Latvia and project’s potential to enhance the compatibility of Chinese and European infrastructure. Latvia actively supports cooperation between China and the Central and Eastern European region.

During the joint press conference of the Chinese President and the speakers of NB8 countries, Ināra Mūrniece underlined that Latvia is interested in increasing of the number of Chinese tourists in order to open direct flights between China and Latvia.
