On Thursday, 24 October, the Saeima appointed Santa Purgaile as the Chair of the Financial and Capital Market Commission (FCMC).
The search for a new Chair was necessitated due to the release of Pēters Putniņš, previous FCMC Chair, from his position of his own volition in July of this year. In order to ensure the continuity of the FCMC operations until the Saeima approves a new FCMC Chair, Kristīne Černaja-Mežmale had been appointed as the interim Chair by the Parliament.
Purgaile obtained the highest assessment score in the public competition held by the Cabinet of Ministers for the Chair of the FCMC.
Previously, Santa Purgaile had been the Chief Commercial Officer Corporate at AS “Citadele Banka” and Co-Chair of Crediting Committee at Finance Latvia Association. She had also worked for AS “SEB Banka”. Santa Purgaile holds a master’s degree in international economics and business.
In accordance with the amendments to the Law on the Financial and Capital Market Commission adopted by the Saeima in June of this year, the candidate for the FCMC Chair position shall be selected by the Cabinet in a public competition and, upon the Cabinet recommendation, approved by the Saeima for a five‑year term of office.
