Speaker of the Saeima: We are creative, we know how to change for the better, we have our place in the sun

(18.11.2020.)

We live in a country with strong public safety, scenic nature, and healthy food. We can successfully accomplish work that has never been done before and come up with innovative solutions. We are creative, we strive for excellence, and we know how to change for the better. We have our freedom, and we have our own country.  We have our place in the sun, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, at the ceremonial sitting of the Saeima in honour of the 102nd anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia held on Wednesday, 18 November.

Speaker of the Saeima applauded the fact that Latvia has many talented, hardworking people with unique ideas.

On the birthday of the State of Latvia, the Speaker urged to applaud the medical staff and thank doctors, their assistants, nurses, orderlies, and everyone who selflessly treats patients every day, putting their own health at risk.

Referring to the pandemic, the speaker pointed out that it is a hard fight, but it can be won. Everyone can contribute, and at present, it requires even less than at other crucial moments Latvia has faced in the past. “We just need to keep our distance, comply with the restrictions, and wear face masks. Because we need to stop the spread of the infection, protect our health and lives so that each and every one of us can return to normal life as soon as possible.”

Speaker Mūrniece emphasised that truthful, coherent, and reliable information is critical at this time, and urged to jointly express gratitude to the media who work every day to expose false and misleading information.

Likewise, the political resilience and defence capabilities of countries are put to a serious test. “While safeguarding state and public security, we continue to maintain our military vigilance, develop defence capabilities, and supplement our resources. We appreciate the active involvement of NATO partners in strengthening security and defence in the Baltic region.”

This period of time has shown that the 13th Saeima is capable of functioning under arduous circumstances. The Saeima was one of the first parliaments in the world to implement a special technological solution, the e-Saeima platform, to ensure that the Parliament remains fully operational throughout the state of emergency during the pandemic, said Speaker Mūrniece.

Speaker Mūrniece referred to the developments in Belarus, specifically the rise of democracy in the neighbouring country and called on support for stronger European Union sanctions against the Belarusian officials responsible for violence against peaceful protesters.

She also urged to cherish and cultivate the Latvian language and culture - the intangible values of of the people. “Our state language, the Latvian language, strengthens and consolidates the statehood of Latvia.  Our language is like a garden that requires upkeep. We must preserve, cultivate, and cherish our language. There can be no replacement for the Latvian language,” underlined the Speaker.

As we celebrate in these unusual circumstances, we have learned to use imagination, find alternative ways to be festive and, perhaps, embrace the occasion on a deeper emotional level. “On 18 November, we celebrate the fulfilment of our ultimate goal - the existence of our state and our people,” said Mūrniece.

We have always chosen the side of light, the side of the sun - a democratic state governed by the rule of law, freedom of spirit and human dignity,” the Speaker emphasised. “Let us protect, strengthen, and love Latvia! We are strong. We have our place in the sun!”
