Saeima to allocate saved budget resources to meet the healthcare sector needs

(15.12.2021.)

According to the decision of the Presidium of the Saeima on reducing the Saeima budget for 2021 and allocating the funding to the Ministry of Healthcare, the resources of the Saeima budget to the tune of 2.35 million Euros that were not used this year for the initially intended purpose, will be allocated to fund the needs of the healthcare sector.

Part of the saved Saeima budget resources will be allocated to the Children’s Clinical University Hospital for the introduction of new technologies and purchase of equipment. This would allow the hospital to acquire a new and modern artificial blood circulation system and perform surgeries on children of various ages suffering from congenital heart conditions.

The hospital will also be able to acquire ultrasound equipment to provide higher precision examinations to children of various ages with suspected heart conditions, as well as to perform pre-natal diagnostics of congenital heart conditions at the early stages of pregnancy.

The allocated funds will also allow the hospital to acquire a gait assessment analyser, otolaryngology (ear, neck, and nose) specialist office equipment, as well as multi-functional hospital beds.

The unused Saeima budget resources will also be allocated to the provision of vaccines against human papilloma virus for boys and vaccines against whooping cough for pregnant women and teenagers in 2022.

The Saeima managed to save budget resources due to the measures introduced to limit the spread of COVID-19 that lead to cancelling and postponing planned events, conferences, and business trips. This year, the amount of reimbursements claimed by MPs to cover rent and transport costs has decreased as well. The full amount of the funds intended for the renovation and reconstruction of the Parliament premises also remained unspent.

A decision of the Saeima will be required to allocate the budget resources.
