“Moldova has always been Latvia’s priority country in development cooperation. We are working together to support your efforts of European integration, particularly in areas such as good governance, mass media, and regional development,” said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, on Tuesday, 31 March, in Chisinau, the capital city of Moldova, where she is on a visit together with the other speakers of the parliaments of the Baltic and Nordic countries (NB8).

Speaker Mūrniece acknowledged that this joint visit by the MPs of eight countries was a signal of solidarity to Moldova, particularly during this difficult time for the region.

In Chisinau, the speakers of the parliaments of the Baltic and Nordic countries are meeting with Igor Grosu, President of the Parliament of Moldova, representatives of the political groups in the Parliament, as well as Natalia Gavrilița, Prime Minister of Moldova.

Ināra Mūrniece welcomed Moldova’s immediate reaction to the Ukrainian refugee crisis. “It is a demonstration of humanity, solidarity, and the support for common European values,” said the Speaker of the Saeima. As war continues to rage in Ukraine, the European Union (EU) must continue to provide coordinated support for Ukraine and Moldova during the refugee crisis.

Moldova must steadily move ahead with its reforms. Latvia supports Moldova’s European outlook in accordance with the Association Agreement.

Speaker Mūrniece is on a visit to Moldova together with Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, Speaker of the Parliament of Lithuania; Jüri Ratas, Speaker of the Parliament of Estonia; Matti Vanhanen, Speaker of the Parliament of Finland; Birgir Ármannsson, Speaker of the Parliament of Iceland; Masud Gharahkhani, Speaker of the Parliament of Norway; Andreas Norlén, Speaker of the Parliament of Denmark; and Karen Ellemann, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Denmark.

The NB8 format includes the five Nordic countries – Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland, and Sweden – and the three Baltic States – Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. The NB8 is a platform for regular meetings between prime ministers, MPs, and other state officials.
