Saeima approves additional measures to limit the spread of COVID-19
On Thursday, 2 April, the Saeima held an extraordinary sitting and adopted the decision by the Cabinet of Ministers to extend the precautionary measures taken during the emergency situation to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Saeima gears up for remote plenary sittings
Necessary preparations have been made in the parliament for the planned Saeima sitting of 2 April to take place as a video conference, with MPs staying in different premises of the parliament building. This will be a temporary solution in order to ensure that plenary sittings are held in line with the procedures laid down in the Rules of Procedure of the Saeima.

In an extraordinary sitting on Friday, 20 March, the Saeima adopted a special law on measures to prevent and cope with the national threat and its consequences due to the spread of the COVID-19.
Saeima to introduce social support measures for employers, people with low income, and those with disabilities during the state of emergency
On Friday, 20 March, during an extraordinary plenary sitting, the Saeima in the second and final reading adopted as urgent amendments to several laws in order to provide support to employers in covering sick-leave certificates, set out the conditions for granting social assistance benefits to needy and low-income persons, as well as to extend the social security rights of persons with disabilities who would otherwise lose them during this period.

Ināra Mūrniece in Washington, DC: we invite you to consider a long-term support programme to ensure security in the Baltic region
The US military presence in the Baltic region as well as the support provided by the US Congress for the development of military infrastructure in our countries is and will remain highly significant in the years to come. We invite our partners from the USA to consider the need for a long-term support programme. This was emphasised by Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, during a meeting with representatives of the US Congress as part of the working visit to the USA. The Speaker of the Saeima is visiting the USA together with parliamentarians from the Baltic States and Poland.

We are grateful to the USA for its firm support to the Baltic States and Poland for thirty years since the restoration of our independence. The USA has a crucial role in our region. We invite the US Congress to explore the possibility of providing long-term support for the security of our region,” stressed Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, on Tuesday, 3 March, in Washington, DC, during the meeting of the speakers of Baltic and Polish parliaments with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
