The Baltic States need to be more active in insisting on a common regulation at the European Union level to fight disinformation more efficiently, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, on Wednesday, 30 September, at the Latvian Parliament during the meeting with Urmas Reinsalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, who is on an official visit to Latvia.

The Speaker of the Saeima and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia agreed on the threats posed by disinformation and praised the work of the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence. Both sides expressed their satisfaction over the close cooperation of the Baltic States in the field of defence and stressed the importance of NATO’s military presence and its contribution to reinforcing the security of the Baltic region.

The Speaker of the Saeima commended the close cooperation of the Baltic States, underlining the active role of the Baltic Assembly in the implementation of practical cooperation projects, including joint procurements and projects in the defence sector.

Mūrniece and Reinsalu reaffirmed the significance of coordinating recovery measures for the COVID-19 crisis among the Baltic States, developing a sustainable approach at the Baltic level, also regarding restrictions and border crossing measures.

During the meeting, the officials discussed the events in Belarus and expressed support for the Belarusian people. Mūrniece informed Reinsalu that today the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima adopted a statement on the legitimacy of the mandate claimed by the president of Belarus, in which it does not recognise Alexander Lukashenko as a legitimate president.

Additionally, Mūrniece and Reinsalu discussed the current situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, voicing concern about the escalation of the conflict.

Reinsalu also met with Vita Anda Tērauda, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima, Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš, Deputy Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima, and Jānis Vucāns, Head of the Latvian delegation to the Baltic Assembly.
