Mrs. Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, sent a letter to Mr. John Boehner, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, congratulating him on assuming the office.
“Latvia and the United States share a long history of close relations which dates back to the U.S. non-recogniztion policy of the Baltic States occupation and following support for Latvia’s renewed independence. The U.S. Congress has always been an avid advocate of Latvia’s freedom and prosperous development,” stressed the Speaker of the Saeima.
Mrs. Āboltiņa also confirms that the Saeima is interested in further developing parliamentary cooperation with the newly elected U.S. Congress. Her letter also announces that Latvian MPs have formed a group for interparliamentary relations with the United States of America and that its chairman is Mr. Ojārs Kalniņš, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and former ambassador of Latvia to the United States.
