On the Night of Museums on 14 May, all visitors of the main building of the Saeima will have a chance to vote for one of the five proposed logo designs for the 21 August celebrations. The logos designed by children and young people can be viewed on the website www.21augusts.lv devoted to the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia.
On the Night of Museums, each visitor of the Saeima will receive a token that can be used to cast a vote for one of the logos displayed in the Voting Room. The design with the most votes will become the official logo for the ceremonial events in honour of 21 August.
Votes can also be cast on the website of the Latvian Television at www.ltv.lv.
After receiving almost a hundred submissions the special jury has shortlisted five finalists for the public evaluation that will take place on the Night of Museums. Students from secondary and higher education institutions who are under the age of 25 years were eligible for the logo contest.
On 21 August this year, Latvia will celebrate the 20th anniversary of de facto restoration of its independence. 21 August 1991 was a crucial moment in the history of our country because on that day the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia adopted the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia, which restored the de facto independence of Latvia.
This Law renewed the effect of the Satversme (Constitution) adopted in 1922, along with its intrinsic values of a Western democratic state that is governed by law. Adoption of the Constitutional Law annulled the effect of all laws of the USSR in Latvia. This Law served as a reference point for other countries that recognised the restoration of Latvia’s independence.
