Today, 25 November, Speaker of the Saeima Solvita Āboltiņa met with her Lithuanian counterpart Irena Degutienė in Tallinn. During the meeting both agreed that regardless of certain differences of opinion between Latvia and Lithuania, mutual cooperation is essential.
“Latvia and Lithuania must prove their ability to cooperate constructively and to agree upon mutually beneficial solutions regarding the banking sector, as well as energy issues. We have overcome many obstacles in twenty years of independence, and it is crucial that we act in political concord now,” Solvita Āboltiņa emphasised after the meeting. She pointed out that both parties must continue practical cooperation in accordance with Latvia’s and Lithuania’s future cooperation programme.
The Speaker of the Saeima explained that the cancellation of the Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis’ visit to Lithuania was dictated by the need to resolve issues in Latvia pertaining to Latvijas Krājbanka. Many residents of Latvia had relied on the trustworthiness of the bank, and therefore the most appropriate solution is being sought to provide the highest possible level of support to the bank’s clients.
Both parties agreed that the Baltic Assembly is one of the most important forms of cooperation that provides a forum for voicing common positions on issues relevant to the Baltic region at the European level.
On 25 November Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, is participating in the 30th Session of the Baltic Assembly in Tallinn (Estonia).
