On Thursday, 13 June, an exhibition of works by students of the Art Academy Latvia was opened in the grand vestibule of the main building of the Saeima. At the opening, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, noted that it is worthwhile to see yourself from a different perspective through the eyes of young creative people.

This exhibition, which is organised in the framework of the project Tales of the Saeima: Students of the Art Academy of Latvia at the Saeima, is a pleasant break which makes us genuinely smile during the intense period of work shortly before the end of the spring session said Speaker Āboltiņa.

The Speaker of the Saeima urged MPs to pay close attention to these works albeit with a smile. 

Āboltiņa expressed satisfaction with the successful cooperation that has developed between the Saeima and the Art Academy of Latvia. In the beginning of 2012, arts students were drawing and painting portraits of MPs as part of the project Portrait Workshop 2012: Students from the Department of Graphic Art of the Art Academy of Latvia.

In expressing gratitude for the chance to hold the second exhibition of this kind at the Saeima, Aleksejs Naumovs, Rector of the Art Academy of Latvia, emphasised that the opening of such an exhibition gives an opportunity for artists and MPs to meet in a positive atmosphere and to share their perspective on the work of the Saeima.

The exhibition is organised within the framework of bilateral cooperation project Tales of the Saeima: Students of the Art Academy of Latvia at the Saeima. The young artists from the Art Academy of Latvia have been observing the daily work at the Saeima since November 2012 and have come up with pieces of art in different techniques and formats which tell their tale of the events, situations and the most memorable moments at the Saeima.

Through diverse projects and exhibitions, the Saeima has established close cooperation with educational institutions specialising in the arts. In March 2010, the main building of the Saeima hosted an exhibition of graduation works by students from the Janis Rozentāls Art High School. It has also hosted works of young arts students depicting the decorated interior of the Saeima during national celebrations. Works depicting the building of the parliament and its interior by students from the Bolderāja Arts and Music School could be seen at the Visitor and Information Centre of the Saeima.

This exhibition will be on display at the Saeima until 19 June.
