On Monday, 7 October, Andrejs Klementjevs, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, welcomed the delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia to the Saeima and introduced it to the work of the Latvian parliament and explained the various learning opportunities they will have during this study visit.

The Deputy Speaker emphasised the good relations between Latvia and Armenia by referring to the recent visit of the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia to Latvia, as well as highlighting the potential for further development of relations, including interparliamentary relations.

Klementjevs emphasised that an open parliament, cooperation with society and involvement of society in the legislative process are among the Saeima’s priorities. The Deputy Speaker also affirmed that the Saeima is ready to share with the Armenian parliament its valuable experience in implementing reforms through intensified cooperation among sectoral committees, interparliamentary cooperation groups and the administrations of both parliaments. 

During the meeting, the visiting delegation expressed interest in learning about cooperation between the parliament and the government. Klementjevs explained that the Latvian parliament not only adopts laws but also supervises the work of the government. It has a multitude of tools at its disposal, including the possibility to summon ministers to attend committee meetings and respond to questions. The Deputy Speaker also highlighted the role of parliamentary secretaries in managing relations between the parliament and the government. 

During the meeting with the Armenian delegation, Deputy Speaker Klementjevs also addressed socio-economic issues and developments in the transit sector.

The Armenian delegation acknowledged that the experience of the Latvian parliament, especially its committees and administration, will be very valuable.

On 7 and 8 October, a delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia is on a study visit to the Saeima, where it will meet with the committees of the Saeima and representatives of the administration of the Latvian parliament.
