On Friday, 29 November, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, hosted a meeting with Ene Ergma, Speaker of the Estonian parliament, and Loreta Graužinienė, Speaker of the Lithuanian parliament, and invited them to the grand opening of the European Capital of Culture on 17 January 2014, when Richard Wagner’s opera Rienzi will be staged in the Latvian National Opera as a part of the opening of “Riga 2014”.
Furthermore, Āboltiņa invited her Estonian and Lithuanian colleagues to once again jointly celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Baltic Way on 23 August next year.
The Speaker of the Saeima emphasised that the Baltic Way was a true manifestation of spiritual unity between otherwise different peoples who joined their strengths in achieving their shared objective – the renewal of independence. Āboltiņa also noted that the Baltic Way is a historic landmark that not only unified the people of the three neighbouring countries but also strengthened their self- confidence.
Speakers of the Estonian and Lithuanian parliaments are on a working visit to Latvia, where they are participating in the 32nd Session of the Baltic Assembly and the 19th Baltic Council.
