On Sunday, 18 January, members of the Presidium of the Saeima, members of the Education, Culture and Science Committee of the Saeima and staff members of the Saeima took part in the public campaign Chain of Booklovers – the Path of Light. The campaign was the central event in the opening of Riga 2014 in which thousands of people passed books from hand to hand from the old building of the National Library of Latvia to the new one.
In November of last year, during the opening of the travelling exhibition Riga in the course of 100 years: 1914-2014 at the main building of the Saeima, more than 100 people registered for the book-chain.
The first books passed down from the old building of the National Library of Latvia to the new one were books collected during the People’s Bookshelf campaign whereby everyone was invited to donate a book to the National Library of Latvia, writing a note or a personal message related to the particular book on its title page. These, along with tens of thousands of other books donated by people, travelled from hand to hand to the new building of the National Library of Latvia and are now stored in the glass wall of the new building which reaches up to the fifth floor.
