On Wednesday, 22 January, during its extraordinary plenary sitting, the Saeima approved Laimdota Straujuma as Prime Minister and gave a vote of confidence to her Cabinet of Ministers. There were 64 votes for, 27 votes against and 2 abstentions.
Raimonds Vējonis will assume the post of the Minister for Defence, and Edgars Rinkēvičs will continue to serve as the Minister for Foreign Affairs. The Ministry of Economics will be headed by Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis, the Ministry of Finance by Andris Vilks, and the Ministry of the Interior by Rihards Kozlovskis. Ina Druviete will assume the post of the Minister of Education and Science, Dace Melbārde will continue to serve as the Minister for Culture, and the post of the Minister for Welfare will be assumed by Uldis Augulis. Anrijs Matīss will continue to serve as the Minister for Transport, Baiba Broka will be the Minister for Justice, and Ingrīda Circene will continue to serve as the Minister for Health. The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development will be headed by Einārs Cilinskis, and the Ministry of Agriculture by Jānis Dūklavs.
On 27 November 2013, Valdis Dombrovskis, the former Prime Minister, assumed political responsibility for the supermarket tragedy in Zolitūde by announcing his resignation from the post of Prime Minister.
