“Latvia previously promised Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova that it would be among the first member states of the European Union to ratify the association agreements with these countries. Therefore, I am gratified that today the Saeima unanimously supported the ratification of all three association agreements, thus fulfilling our promise and expressing our country’s political support for these Eastern Partnership countries,” said Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, on Monday, 14 July, after the ratification of the European Union (EU) association agreements with Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova.
Latvia has identified the Eastern Partnership as one of its top priorities for its presidency of the Council of the EU during the first half of 2015. “The goal of the Eastern Partnership has always been and continues to be helping our eastern neighbours to come closer to the EU and increasing stability in the region by reinforcing such basic values as democracy, good governance, human rights and market economy,” emphasised Speaker Āboltiņa.
“In recent months, during my official visits to Georgia and Moldova, I have seen proof that these countries truly wish to become more integrated into European institutions. It is to show our political support for the decision taken by these Eastern Partnership countries and also to offer practical assistance. Latvia is also ready to share its experience in reforms and expertise in various areas with Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova,” said the Speaker of the Saeima.
