On Wednesday, 4 February, when Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament (EP), she emphasised that “attracting public and private investment, creating new jobs, as well as reducing social inequality are essential for Europe’s economic development; they are not only topics for parliamentary discussions but issues that directly affect all Europeans”. She also expressed satisfaction about the long-awaited discussions concerning European Union’s investment plan, or the so-called ”new deal”, within the framework of the EU economic governance conference organised by the Saeima and the EP.

“I am very gratified by the effective and constructive cooperation between our parliaments at both the political and administrative level,” said the Speaker, underlining that constructive dialogue with the EP has helped to include several important issues on the agenda of the interparliamentary conference on the future of Europe’s economy. 

The President of the EP congratulated Latvia for successfully preparing and launching the first Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Among other topics, the situation in Greece and the related challenges to the EU economy were discussed during the meeting.  

Speaker Mūrniece expressed her gratitude to President Schulz for his personal support to the Latvian Presidency, especially in organising a photo exhibition dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the regaining of Latvia’s independence, as well as a concert of traditional and contemporary Latvian music to be held next to the EP building on 6 May. “We appreciate this opportunity to remind Europe of our history and our path of development since regaining independence,” said the Speaker.
