Saeima adopts a resolution on the situation in Ukraine

(23.01.2014.)

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, the Saeima calls on the parties involved in the conflict to end the violence, refrain from provocations and solve the political crisis peacefully by finding a mutually acceptable solution. That was said on Thursday, 23 January, in the Resolution on the Situation in Ukraine adopted by the Saeima.

The Latvian parliament urges the political authorities of Ukraine to act responsibly, avoid actions that could aggravate the conflict and revise the laws that have been adopted limiting the right of assembly and freedom of speech. The Saeima also calls on the law-enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation and bring charges against the people responsible for killing several protesters and attacking journalists.

The Resolution of the Saeima also states that the Latvian parliament is closely following the developments in Ukraine and strongly condemns the use of violence by all conflicting parties which has led to aggravation of the situation and subsequent bloodshed. The Saeima also emphasises that the use of excessive force has already escalated into violence in Kiev resulting not only in a great number of injured but also in fatalities, and deplores the inability of the parties involved in the conflict to resolve it through negotiations.
