On Wednesday, 10 November, Vita Anda Tērauda, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima, took part in a remote meeting with the heads of the European Affairs Committees of the Parliaments of Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland and discussed the current situation on the border with Belarus.
"It is crucial not only to react to what is happening on the Belarusian border, but also to do everything in our power to prevent hybrid attacks in the future and to make such unconventional operations on the borders of the European Union impossible," emphasised Tērauda.
Upon discussing the latest developments on the Polish-Belarusian border, the Committee Chairs also talked about EU's Strategic Compass for security and defence, a document issued this week that aims to reinforce a common vision on security and defence among EU Member States. The heads of the European Affairs Committees stressed that the implementation of this document would allow for more effective combatting of 21st century threats to European security.
The meeting also included discussions on ensuring greater stability of energy prices in the future and reducing energy dependence on third countries, as well as the agenda of the upcoming Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) on 29-30 November.
The European Affairs Committees of the Baltic and Polish Parliaments traditionally hold biannual Committee Chair meetings to discuss topical European Union issues. These meetings strengthen cooperation ties, promote the exchange of views, and help find compromises in shaping policies that are in line with national interests.
