On Friday, 12 November, the Saeima approved Atis Lejiņš as the Head of the Latvian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA).
The delegation was previously headed by the late Ojārs Ēriks Kalniņš.
The NATO PA was founded in 1955 as an advisory interparliamentary organisation that unites the parliamentarians of NATO member states.
The PA serves as an important link between the NATO and the parliaments of its member states, strengthening the political dialogue and promoting public support for the policies of the Alliance. It ensures democratic control over the armed forces, promotes awareness of the key security issues, and improves the transparency of NATO policies. The Assembly helps strengthen transatlantic relationships – a core value of the Alliance – and a mutually beneficial cooperation with the European Union.
