Members of the European Affairs Committee express their support for Ukraine

(23.02.2022.)

On Wednesday, 23 February, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented a report on the situation in Ukraine during a meeting of the European Affairs Committee. The Committee members expressed their support for Ukraine, its sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

The members of the Saeima emphasised the need for Europe to act in unity and defend the international rights violated by the Russian Federation when it recognised the independence of the self‑proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk “people’s republics”.

Vita Anda Tērauda, Chair of the European Affairs Committee, underlined that the EU Member States had managed to quickly agree on sanctions in response to Russia’s actions, at the same time calling for further EU‑level dialogue on providing stronger economic and military support for Ukraine.

During the meeting, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed MPs about the EU Member States’ discussions regarding a joint response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. In addition, the Ministry noted that there were ongoing EU‑level talks about the possibility of additional sanctions if Russia escalated the situation.
