Dagmāra Beitnere-Le Galla, Deputy Speaker of the Saeima, while addressing the Honorary Consuls of Latvia in the Parliament on Monday, 11 July, thanked them for their commitment, energy, and dedication to work for the benefit of the Latvian state.

Dagmāra Beitnere-Le Galla noted that this year was special as it marked 100 years since the first Saeima convened as well as the centenary of the Constitution. "Latvia's history has passed through various periods. Our memory preserves moments of courage and pain," said the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima.

Turning to the current geopolitical issues, Beitnere-Le Galla noted that Russia's war in Ukraine was changing the political landscape. "Support for Ukraine among Latvians is genuine. We can easily identify with Ukrainians," said the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima.

"As the war broke out, the Saeima adopted a resolution on granting the status of an EU candidate country to Ukraine. This was the right step towards the goal of securing a life in Europe for Ukraine, for which the Ukrainian people have been fighting for many years," said Beitnere-Le Galla. "We are aware that Ukraine is paying a very high price for being in Europe. Ukraine is fighting for all of us," said the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima.

Latvia's Honorary Consuls represent Latvia's interests in all regions of the world - not only Europe and America, but also Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been organising meetings of Latvian Honorary Consuls in Riga since 2002, and they take place biannually. Such meetings have become a tradition that allows Latvia to promote economic, cultural, and consular cooperation, especially in countries where Latvia does not have diplomatic missions.
