On Thursday, 3 December, the Saeima decided to extend the participation of soldiers of the Latvian National Armed Forces in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan until 31 December 2016.

At the NATO Wales Summit held last September member states agreed on a long-term commitment to continue providing support to Afghanistan. The role of the NATO forces will shift from engaging in combat operations to providing advisory and training support to the Afghani forces.
