In a New Year’s photo greeting, boys and girls residing in a Ukrainian orphanage thanked the Latvian parliament for the wonderful surprise of presents collected at the Christmas charity event. This year, the gifts collected during the traditional Saeima charity drive along with heartfelt greeting from Latvia made their way to the Chernigiv Community Work Centre for Children and Youth to delight those most in need.
The 34 children living in the Chernigiv Community Work Centre received the gifts and greetings from Latvia at their New Year’s celebration. The charity drive gave MPs and staff of the Saeima the opportunity to fulfil children’s dreams by sending them items that the boys and girls had indicated as most desired – clothes, sports equipment and toys. The Saeima also collected money donations to purchase two television sets and toys for two of the Centre’s playrooms.
Along with the presents, the children also received gingerbread hearts that were decorated under the guidance of Chef Raimonds Zommers at a Christmas workshop near the main building of the Saeima by MPs and staff members of the parliament, together with students of the Riga Ukrainian Secondary School. The annual Christmas charity event of the Saeima was introduced several years ago. This was the sixth Christmas Workshop organised by the parliament.
This year the initiative for the charity event to serve as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine came from the Baltic Assembly. Parliaments of all three Baltic States were involved in the charity event. The gifts were delivered to the children in Ukraine in cooperation with the Latvian postal service and Latvian Consulate in the Chernigiv Region.
