Mūrniece: parliaments contribute to peace and democracy in the Baltic Sea region

(29.08.2016.)

On Monday, 29 August, Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, called on the Baltic Sea region countries to jointly contribute to the region’s peace and democracy, which is now more vital than ever to counter the conflict threats.

Stressing that these days we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the cooperation among the parliaments of the Baltic Sea region, Speaker of the Saeima reminded the audience that the founding fathers of the Baltic Sea regional cooperation also had a vision of peace and democracy. “Today, when our world is shattered by crises and conflicts, their vision inspires us more than ever to build bridges and tear down walls,” said Speaker Mūrniece.

“Now, at the time of increasing instability, we need to join efforts in defending our common values – democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, as well as international rules-based order,” said Ināra Mūrniece, as she opened the 25th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference in Riga.

Speaker Mūrniece highlighted the pivotal role of parliaments in fostering democracy both nationally and internationally. She also urged parliamentarians to remain committed to democratic values and to nurture peace, freedom, and prosperity in the region, as well as to respond to the needs of their people.

From 28 to 30 August, Riga hosts the 25th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference. This year, it focuses on high-quality education and labour as prerequisites for economic growth of the Baltic Sea region countries.

The Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference was established in 1991 as a forum for political dialogue between parliamentarians from the Baltic Sea region: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, and Sweden. The BSPC gathers parliamentarians from 11 national parliaments, 11 regional parliaments, and 5 parliamentary organisations around the Baltic Sea. The Saeima, represented by its Baltic Assembly delegation, has been a participant since the establishment of the BSPC.
