We appreciate the Slovenian parliament's decision to send the country’s troops to the NATO battle group in Latvia. This action confirms Slovenia's solidarity and support for our region. Speaker Ināra Mūrniece stressed this on Tuesday, 28 March, at the Saeima, during a meeting with Milan Brglez, President of the Slovenian National Assembly, who is on an official visit to Latvia.

The Speaker of the Saeima said that Latvia welcomes the decision taken at the NATO Warsaw Summit to enhance the Alliance's presence in the Baltic States and Poland, as it is a practical expression of solidarity and a deterrent signal to Russia. Latvia is currently doing its utmost to get ready to host the NATO battle group, which must be ready to quickly react in crisis situations to any potential attack, stressed Speaker Mūrniece.

Latvia and Slovenia share friendly relations and an active political dialogue, including on the items covered by the European Union and NATO agendas, emphasised Mūrniece. The two countries are linked by cooperation among parliamentary committees. Both the Saeima and the National Assembly have established groups of MPs for cooperation with the other country's legislature.

Ināra Mūrniece expressed concern about the situation in Eastern Ukraine. The Speaker of the Saeima stressed that Russia's activities along NATO's borders attest to our need for unity and consistency in continuing the current policy in relations with Russia, so that the only chance of economic sanctions being reviewed is after full implementation of the Minsk agreement.

The meeting was also attended by Rihards Kols, Deputy Chair of the Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee, and Ringolds Balodis, Secretary of the Saeima National Security Committee and member of the Saeima group for interparliamentary relations with Slovenia. Milan Brglez is accompanied on the visit by Simon Zajc, Deputy Chair of the National Assembly's Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Food, and Marko Pogačnik, Deputy Chair of the Committee on EU Affairs.
