Georgia is an important cooperation partner of Latvia. We continue to stand firm in our support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the Euro-Atlantic integration efforts of Georgia. Taking this path requires fierce determination of the parliament and the government to implement democratic reforms, said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, during her meeting with Kakhaber Kuchava, Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, in Athens, Greece on Friday, 22 October.
The Saeima has experience in active cooperation with the Parliament of Georgia and its Administration, and the parliamentarians of both countries work closely in international parliamentary organisations. Latvia will continue to share its democratic transformation experience with Georgia, emphasised Speaker Mūrniece.
While discussing the future of the Eastern Partnership of the European Union, Mūrniece reaffirmed strong support of Latvia for deepening the EU’s cooperation and integration with associated countries — Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
During their meeting, Speakers of the Parliaments of Latvia and Georgia highlighted recent developments in Georgia’s domestic policy and its Parliament. Both parties also exchanged experience in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaker Mūrniece is currently attending the European Conference of Presidents of Parliament in Athens, Greece. On 22 October, the conference also hosted a meeting of Women Presidents of Parliament that focused on gender equality issues and highlighting the significant contribution of women in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
