On Thursday, 12 May, in the second and final reading, the Saeima supported urgent amendments to the Law on Assistance to Ukrainian Civilians. The changes aim to support persons who provide Ukrainian civilians fleeing the war with accommodation in their property free of charge.
According to the new provisions, a natural person will be entitled to a compensation for the additional costs incurred as a result of providing accommodation to Ukrainians fleeing the war. The compensation is set at EUR 100 per month for the first person accommodated and EUR 50 per month for each consequent person, in total not exceeding EUR 300 per month for persons accommodated in one dwelling.
In order to receive the compensation, the host or his or her authorised person will have to submit an application for compensation to the municipality in whose administrative territory the accommodation is located within 14 days from the reception of a Ukrainian civilian. The compensation to the host will be granted for a period not exceeding 90 days from the date of reception of the Ukrainian civilian indicated in the application for compensation, but not earlier than 1 May 2022.
The law will enter into force on the day following its promulgation.
