The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Saeima will be chaired by Ināra Mūrniece, the Members of the Committee decided on Thursday, 20 June.
The Committee's leadership has been re-elected because its former Chair, Rihards Kols, has been elected to the European Parliament.
The Foreign Affairs Committee deliberates foreign affairs-related legislation and exercises parliamentary control over foreign affairs. Before the discussion at the Saeima plenary sitting, the Committee decides on international treaties, Latvia's accession to international conventions, as well as other issues related to foreign affairs.
The Committee coordinates Latvia’s foreign policy positions and proposals for the development of international relations. It also deliberates and approves the nominated Latvian ambassadors, and its opinion is submitted to the President of Latvia, who appoints the ambassadors to the office.
The committees of the Saeima work in a specific legislative area, supervise the activities of the executive power, as well as perform other tasks corresponding to the specifics of the work of the committee. The committees of the Saeima prepare matters for consideration at the sittings of the Saeima. On the basis of the decisions of the Saeima, the committees examine draft laws, proposals and submissions.
