Tomorrow, 24 October, delegations from around the world will gather in Riga to participate in the Third Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform. The summit aims to underscore the global impact of Russia's aggression and continue to bring international attention to the crimes committed by the aggressor.
The summit will be opened by the Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, and the Chairman of the Parliament of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to address the event remotely. Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže, and First Vice-Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Nariman Dzhelyal, will also deliver opening remarks.
The Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform in Riga forms part of Latvia's comprehensive support for Ukraine and its contribution to strengthening the rules-based international order. Organised by the Saeima in close cooperation with Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, the summit will be attended by delegations from around 50 countries worldwide.
Delegations from the parliaments of Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guatemala, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tonga, Turkey, and the United Kingdom have confirmed their participation in the Summit. Most parliaments will be represented at the level of the speakers. Representatives from international organisations will also participate. The Summit will be streamed live at www.crimea-platform-riga.lv/ and on Parliament's YouTube account.
Several other events in support of Ukraine are also planned as part of the Summit, including expert discussions on Russia’s accountability and the impact of the war on European security.
The International Crimea Platform was established in 2021 as a coordination and consultation framework involving states, governments, parliaments, foreign ministers, and experts. Its purpose is to raise awareness among world leaders and the wider public about the temporary occupation and annexation of the Crimean peninsula, and its negative impact on the human rights of local populations, security in the Black Sea region, global food security, and the rules-based international order. Previous Parliamentary Summits of the Crimean Platform have been held in Zagreb and Prague.
