Daiga Mieriņa in Chișinău: Moldova must be brave in defending its democracy

(14.04.2025.)

“You must be brave in defending your democracy through firm adherence to the rule of law. Future generations will thank you for it,” emphasised Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa on Monday, 14 April, during a meeting in Chișinău with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu.

Democracy requires continuous investment—not only in resources but also in upholding democratic standards, noted Speaker Mieriņa.

She highlighted that Latvia commends Moldova’s comprehensive reforms and its strong determination to continue them: “You are on the right path,” stated the Speaker, affirming Latvia’s strong support for the reforms and stressing that Latvia understands Moldova’s challenges, as it too liberated itself from Soviet rule 35 years ago.

The Speaker of the Saeima also reaffirmed Latvia’s support for Moldova in the face of Russia’s hybrid attacks, noting that Latvia will continue to provide practical assistance in strengthening Moldova’s energy sector resilience.

Both Mieriņa and Sandu underscored the importance of regional cooperation—noting, for example, the successful collaboration between the Latvian city of Auce and the Moldovan city of Ungheni in education, public administration, and other areas.

Speaker Mieriņa is on an official visit to Moldova until 15 April. She has met with the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu, and Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Oleg Serebrian. Further meetings are planned with the Deputy Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Doina Gherman, Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova, Mihail Popșoi.

During her visit to the Moldovan Parliament, the Speaker will also meet with Ana Calinici, Head of the Moldova–Latvia Parliamentary Friendship Group, along with other members of the group.

The visit will conclude with a trip to the city of Ungheni, where Speaker Mieriņa will meet with representatives of the region to discuss regional development issues. The Moldovan side will also learn about Latvia’s experience regarding the benefits and challenges of European Union integration. Ungheni has a cooperation agreement with the Latvian city of Auce.

The Speaker is accompanied on the visit to Chișinău by Jana Simanovska, Head of the Saeima's Group for promoting cooperation with the Moldovan Parliament.
