On Friday, 28 March, during the first-day cancellation ceremony for postage stamps dedicated to the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Latvia and Georgia held at the main building of the Saeima, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, said that this postage stamp attests to friendship and good relations between our nations.

The Speaker highlighted that despite the distance of thousands of kilometres between Riga and Tbilisi, both nations always have had close and friendly relations. “This postage stamp is yet another way to show how special the ties and friendship between our people are,” said Solvita Āboltiņa.

Speaker Āboltiņa indicated that already on Sunday she, together with her colleagues from the Latvian parliament, will leave for Georgia to reiterate Latvia’s support to Georgia and during joint discussion to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the framework of development cooperation and the Eastern Partnership. “Together with greetings from Latvia, I will be glad to personally present our Georgian colleagues with the postage stamp and the first-day envelope that have been issued in honour of our friendship. I hope that on its way around the world this postage stamp will bring along peace, harmony and friendship imbedded in its idea,” said the Speaker.Last

November, when Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met her counterpart David Usupashvili, Speaker of the Georgian parliament, both speakers presented the design of the postage stamp devoted to the 20th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Latvia and Georgia.

Today, Speaker Āboltiņa and Teimuraz Janjalia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Latvia, ceremonially cancelled the postage stamp on a special first-day envelope.

Ambassador Janjalia confirmed that during the past 20 years cooperation between the two countries has been very active and Georgia has received significant support from Latvia.

During the ceremonial event, philatelists and other participants had an opportunity to cancel the postage stamp and the special envelope in the grand vestibule of the main building of the Saeima. Today, until 7:00 p.m., the first-day cancellation of the new postage stamp also takes place in the Sakta postal office on Brīvības bulvāris 32 in Riga.

The author of the design of the joint postage stamp is the Georgian artist Giorgi Qartvelishvili. The postage stamp depicts the freedom symbols of both countries – the Monument of Freedom standing in Riga, and Kartlis Deda (Mother of Kartli) erected in Tbilisi; the nominal value of the 50,000 new postage stamps is 85 cents.

Latvia and Georgia are linked with friendly and constructive ties which are reflected in active political dialogue and contacts between both peoples. Diplomatic relations between both countries were established on 11 March 1993. Latvia as a member state of the European Union and NATO always has supported Georgia in its reform processes.
