On Thursday, 20 February, Speaker of the Saeima Daiga Mieriņa welcomed Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas to the Parliament for discussions on support for Ukraine. Both leaders agreed that Ukraine must be directly involved in negotiations on the peace process.
“Europe’s security is inseparable from Ukraine’s security. The stronger, more united, and more resilient we are, the better we can provide for our own security,” Mieriņa emphasised. In discussions on Europe’s role in ensuring its own security and defence, the Saeima Speaker and the Lithuanian Prime Minister reaffirmed their commitment to increasing defence investment and strengthening military industries.
Both leaders also underscored the importance of the European Union and the United States as essential strategic partners, stressing the need for continued close coordination and a unified stance on Ukraine and the threats posed by Russia.
The meeting also addressed energy security in the Baltic region, with Mieriņa and Paluckas welcoming the Baltic States' successful disconnection from the Russian and Belarusian electricity grid (BRELL) and their full integration into the European energy system.
Progress on the Rail Baltica railway project was also reviewed, with both sides highlighting its economic, military, and geopolitical importance.
Saeima Secretary Edvards Smiltēns also participated in the meeting
