In our second century of independence, Latvia and Estonia are close and like-minded friends. We must continue to stay together on our Baltic and European way, underlined Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, in Tallinn on Friday, 20 August, while congratulating Estonia on the 30^th anniversary of restoring the country's independence.

Looking back at the common history of the two states, Mūrniece emphasised that one hundred years ago both nations fought side by side in the War of Independence and thirty years ago they stood in unity on the Baltic Way.

To mark the 30^th anniversary of Estonia's restored independence, the Speaker of the Saeima, together with the Parliament Speakers of the Baltic States, Iceland, and Poland and the President of the European Parliament, attended a flag-raising ceremony in the park outside the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) and a church service at St. Mary's Cathedral in Tallinn. Mūrniece also laid flowers at the Memorial Stone to 20 August 1991 and planted larches in Kadriorg Park together with other Speakers.

During her visit, the Speaker of the Saeima went to the Estonian Parliament, where she attended the joint ceremonial sitting of the August 20^th Club and the 14^th Riigikogu, and participated in a reception organised by Jüri Ratas, Speaker of the Estonian Parliament, in honour of the August 20^th Club.

The celebrations in Tallinn marking the 30^th anniversary of the restoration of independence of the Republic of Estonia were also attended by Velta Čebotarenoka, President of the 4 May Declaration Club.
