On Tuesday, 10 May, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Per Westerberg, Speaker of the Riksdag, in Stockholm and expressed her opinion that during last 20 years bilateral relations between Latvia and Sweden have been very active because both countries have had close cooperation in international politics, education, culture and economics.

On the Night of Museums on 14 May, all visitors of the main building of the Saeima will have a chance to vote for one of the five proposed logo designs for the 21 August celebrations. The logos designed by children and young people can be viewed on the website www.21augusts.lv devoted to the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia.
On Tuesday, 10 May, the Education, Culture and Science Committee supported the idea to ensure places in kindergartens for all children who have reached 1.5 years of age.
On Tuesday, 10 May, MPs from the Defence, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee of the Saeima visited ship-building company AS Rīgas kuģu būvētava and concluded that building of brand-new patrol vessels for the National Armed Forces is a substantial contribution to our national economy. Not only it creates new jobs and income from taxes but also enables the local ship-building company to master unique technologies that can also be used for fulfilling orders from abroad.

Political responsibility regarding national development strategies highlighted at conference in the Saeima (02.05.2011.)
On Friday, 29 April, the Saeima hosted a conference on the Optimal Mechanism for the Introduction and Monitoring of National Development Strategies. Its participants pointed out that national development strategies have to receive broad political support already at the drafting stage because so far lack of political responsibility has been the weakest link in implementing the plans.
On Tuesday, 26 April, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, together with representatives from pro-transparency NGO Delna and the Children’s Forum of Latvia, launched the Youth Parliament project. She pointed out that the parliament should be open to all ideas and all people, including youths, whose creative ideas will shape Latvia in the future.
On Wednesday, 20 April, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met with U.S. senators in the Latvian parliament. She noted that since the renewal of its independence, Latvia has been working to establish close contacts with the United States as a strategic partner that has significantly supported Latvia in achieving its major foreign policy goals. These relations should be further enhanced in various areas, including defence, economy and energy.
The Portrait Gallery project in the Saeima is concluded (15.04.2011.)
On Friday, 15 April, the Saeima and the Janis Rozentāls Art High School concluded their cooperation project, the Portrait Gallery, as a part of which young artists were invited to draw portraits of MPs and sketches of situations during plenary sittings starting from the early March.
On Thursday, 14 April, the Saeima adopted in the second and final reading amendments to the state budget for 2011 and nine budget-related laws.
