On Monday, 11 April, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, and Miroslava Nĕmcová, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, had a meeting in the Saeima followed by a press briefing during which Āboltiņa noted that close historical and cultural ties link Latvia and its trustworthy ally – the Czech Republic.
On 7 April, World Health Day, the Saeima participated in Blood Donor Day during which 66 people donated their blood in the State Blood Donor Centre bus stationed by the main building of the Saeima.
On Thursday, 7 April, the parliament adopted in the third reading amendments to the Law on Public Holidays, Commemorative Days and Days of Significance, and thus 4 May was renamed as the Day of the Renewal of Independence of the Republic of Latvia, and 21 August as the Day of the Adoption of the Constitutional Law on the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia.
On Tuesday, 5 April, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, emphasized at the annual Conference of European Union (EU) Member State Parliament Speakers: “Latvia’s goal at present is to fulfil the requirements of the Maastricht Treaty and to join the euro zone in 2014. That is why Latvia supports initiatives that promote stability and competitiveness in the euro zone.”
On Monday, 4 April, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, met with Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament (EP), prior to the annual Conference of European Union Parliament Speakers in Brussels.
On Friday, 1 April, during the meeting between members of the Latvian delegation to the Baltic Assembly (BA) and Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovkis, it was emphasised that the Baltic States have to make progress in common energy and infrastructure development projects; for example, they need to decide on the location of the proposed liquefied natural gas terminal and on implementing the Rail Baltic project.
On Monday, 28 March, MPs from various committees of the Saeima met with Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO Secretary General, in NATO’s headquarters in Brussels, in order to discuss topical issues on the Alliance’s agenda.
On Friday, 25 March, Solvita Āboltiņa, Speaker of the Saeima, participated at the wreath laying ceremony at the Monument of Freedom and gave her address to commemorate the victims of the communist genocide.
The group for interparliamentary relations with Japan is urging people to participate in the ecumenical memorial service for the land and people of Japan that will take place tomorrow night in the Dome Church.
In a letter to Ojārs Kalniņš, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Hillary Rodham Clinton, the U.S. Secretary of State, thanks him for taking part in the visit of the Latvian Minister for Foreign Affairs to the U.S. in February 2011.
