"Latvia and Georgia share an active parliamentary cooperation. I congratulate Georgia on its 100th anniversary of parliamentarianism," said Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, during the meeting with Tea Maisuradze, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to the Republic of Latvia, on her introductory visit to the Saeima.
Georgia can always count on our support in its Euro-Atlantic integration process, and we will continue to take a firm stand as regards the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. Latvia and Georgia are linked by a close political dialogue and dynamic cooperation, and also the 13th Saeima has set up a group for promoting cooperation with the Parliament of Georgia," said Speaker Mūrniece.
The Speaker reaffirmed the interest of Latvia to share its democratic reform experience with Georgia, noting that the reform process is often difficult for both politicians and the society in general, but it is important to go through with it. The Speaker commended the excellent cooperation with Georgia under the Eastern Partnership policy.
During the meeting, Speaker Mūrniece lauded the visit of the Speakers of the Baltic States and the Nordic countries (NB8) to Georgia in 2017, and affirmed the interest in further strengthening cooperation between the Parliaments of Georgia and the Baltic States and Nordic countries.
The Ambassador of Georgia expressed gratitude to Latvia for its support and appreciation of the contribution of the Saeima in strengthening mutual parliamentary relations. The Ambassador confirmed the desire of Georgia to stimulate economic cooperation, particularly underlining the potential of cooperation in tourism. In addition, both parties discussed opportunities for closer cooperation in education and culture.
This year marks the centenary of the first Georgian Parliament elected in free and democratic elections.
