We firmly support Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration and strongly encourage the implementation of democratic reforms. Ukrainian people have demonstrated their readiness to pay the ultimate price for the freedom, democracy and sovereignty of their country. The rule of law and combating corruption are areas where progress is needed in order to attract foreign direct investment to Ukraine and promote the welfare of the people, stated Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, in her opening address at the international conference “Ukraine’s reforms and European path” on Friday, 6 December.
Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, and Dmytro Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, took part in the conference the emphasis of which was on retaining continuous, unwavering support for Ukraine among the international community. Participants exchanged views about the progress of economic reforms in Ukraine and highlighted good governance, the rule of law, and fight against corruption as crucial factors for the long-term development of the country.
After the conference, Vita Anda Tērauda, Chair of the European Affairs Committee of the Saeima, noted: “Ukraine’s European path leads towards a state governed by the rule of law, and this path is full of internal and external challenges. This path was chosen by the people of Ukraine. We have also walked this path, and our thorough understanding and practical knowledge can help Ukraine reach this aim.”
The Speaker of the Saeima met Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, and Dmytro Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, before the conference and discussed the progress of Ukraine’s reforms, topical issues of EU-Ukraine cooperation, as well as security in Eastern Ukraine in the context of the upcoming Normandy Format summit set to take place in Paris the following week.
