“We enjoy excellent parliamentary cooperation. Since 2024, the Saeima has also supported practical training programmes for staff of the National Assembly of Moldova, and we are committed to continuing this initiative this year,” stated Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, on Monday, 14 April, during a meeting in Chișinău with the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, Igor Grosu.

Speaker Mieriņa underlined that Latvia understands the challenges Moldova faces, having itself emerged from Soviet rule 35 years ago. She emphasised that Latvia strongly supports Moldova’s comprehensive reform process and commends the country’s determination to pursue it further.

“Latvia supports Moldova’s efforts to strengthen security and resilience, advance European Union integration, and implement key reforms—both at the EU level and bilaterally,” said Speaker Mieriņa. She also stressed the significance of this year’s parliamentary elections in Moldova for shaping the country’s foreign policy trajectory, highlighting the importance of fair elections conducted free from external influence.

The Speaker reaffirmed Latvia’s continued support for Moldova in the face of Russia’s hybrid aggression, noting that Latvia would maintain its practical assistance to enhance the resilience of Moldova’s energy sector. “It is entirely possible to achieve national development without reliance on the Russian economy. Our own experience is proof of that,” she remarked.

Speaker Mieriņa is on an official visit to Moldova until 15 April. She is scheduled to meet with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, as well as with Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Doina Gherman; Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Oleg Serebrian; Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov; and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Mihail Popșoi.

During her visit to the Moldovan Parliament, Speaker Mieriņa will also meet with Ana Calinici, Head of the Moldova–Latvia Parliamentary Friendship Group, and other members of the group.

The visit will conclude with a trip to the city of Ungheni, where Speaker Mieriņa will meet with regional representatives to discuss regional development. The Moldovan side will also be introduced to Latvia’s experience regarding the benefits and challenges of European Union integration. Ungheni has a cooperation agreement with the Latvian city of Auce.

Speaker Mieriņa is accompanied on the visit by Jana Simanovska, Head of the Saeima’s Group for promoting cooperation with the Moldovan Parliament.
